As described by the author:
Postal History is a branch of history long neglected by 18th and 19th century professional historians. Work in this area has been largely developed by philatelists for whom Postal History is a collecting hobby. This book confirms the point, the authors are both collectors, one has served for many years in the Merchant Navy on the West Coast of South America to Europe and as a Naval Pilot. His interest is the collection of rare postmarks of Chile. The other has done extensive research into routes and rates for mail connecting Chile to Europe and to the rest of the World. Again a collector delighted in acquiring material. His collections have gained gold medals at International exhibitions.
The two authors thus complement each other and this work is based extensively on their two collections and knowledge.
In addition the descriptions of the location of the various post offices is attributed to the scholarly work of Enrique Vergara R, chief accountant to the Director General of the Posts of Chile who published a work containing an exhaustive account of the Post Offices, Postal Agencies and Postal Collecting points and their connection and collection for distribution circa 1920.
